A Precious Baby, A Precious Name

We came in "knowing" that his middle name was going to be Everett and we had a list of three names that we liked for his first name, Jasper, Benjamin, or Samuel. We were set on not deciding on what his first name was going to be until we saw him because what if he wasn't the one that we had picked? After seeing him with his hairline and facial features he reminded me of some pictures I've seen of Jen's biological grandfather Delmer Ockey. Delmer Ockey died when Jen's mother was seven years old and was very fondly remembered as an awesome man and missionary. It was then that I first questioned what we've been wanting to name him. To be honest I was stuck on the name Jasper as it was a "Precious Stone" in my mind signifying self worth and strength. It is also a stone that represents a tribe of Israel and what one of the foundations of New Jerusalem is described of being made up of according to the New Testament, again thinking of the missionary work that is the foundation of the building up of the New Jerusalem. But the connection with Delmer was too strong for me to ignore. What made it harder for me to pick one of the names we had come into the hospital with over Delmer was the connection that Delmer Ockey had to my family. It was at an Ockey family reunion in British Columbia that I learned that Delmer's brother knew my grandfather, Kent Pilling. Both of the families had grown up in Southern Alberta (Canada) and the children of each family moved to different parts of the United States. I having come from Oregon and Jen from Sandy, UT met at BYU and knew that through divine intervention we met and started our married life together. It wasn't until after the fact that I learned that my dad had grown up with Jen's aunts and uncles in Southern Alberta. Thinking of my grandpa Pilling's personality, I had a feeling that grandpa Pilling and Delmer Ockey were somehow "upstairs, pulling some strings." Yet again with all of the trials in Jen's pregnancy I feel that the duo were here watching over Jen and our precious child. So we've decided on a first name but now the question resides on what the middle name is going to be. Should we go with a pattern that we can call tradition or should we name him after two awesome grandparents who've already passed on? I personally am not set on having a son with my name, though I admit it would have been cool. But in tribute to these two awesome men we are naming him, Delmer Kent Pilling.
